The unusual prospect of two Spring Festivals occurring in a single year — in 2262 — has sparked widespread discussion online.

According to the calendar, the year 2262 will see two Chinese New Year's days: the first on January 21 (the first day of the first lunar month) and the second on February 20 (the first day of the intercalary first lunar month). Such an occurrence of an intercalary first month is exceptionally rare.

The reason behind the dual Spring Festivals lies in the moon's movement. The traditional Chinese lunar calendar calculates the length of a month based on the phases of the moon, known astronomically as the synodic month. The first day of a lunar month, known as shuo, marks the moment when the moon is not visible from Earth, while the 15th day, wang, is the full moon.

If a year contained only 12 lunar months, the average lunar year would be about 354 days — roughly 11 days shorter than the solar year. Over time, this would lead to seasonal misalignment, with Spring Festival potentially falling in summer.

To address this, ancient Chinese astronomers introduced the "intercalation" system, adding an extra lunar month every two to three years to synchronize the average lunar year with the solar year. This additional month is the intercalary month.

Under these rules, 2262 will have an intercalary first month, hence two Spring Festivals.

Because the relative motions of the moon, earth, and sun are not constant, the length of a synodic month varies. Thus, the lunar calendar features longer months of 30 days and shorter ones of 29 days. To ensure the first day of each lunar month aligns with the new moon, the arrangement of long and short months is not fixed but determined through observation and scientific calculation.

Such variations occur approximately every three to five years. Sometimes, several consecutive years may even see Spring Festivals without a "Chinese New Year's Eve", as will be the case from 2025 to 2029.

On Wednesday, the hashtag “2262 Two Spring Festivals But One Holiday” once again topped the trending charts.

According to explanations provided by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Holiday Reform Research Group, in intercalary years with two occurrences of the same festival (e.g., two Dragon Boat Festivals or Mid-Autumn Festivals), only the first instance is designated as a public holiday.

Annual holiday arrangements are typically announced by relevant authorities toward the end of the preceding year. Generally, the scheduling and duration of holidays are planned to minimize disruption to social life.
